The LCI as a Science-Based Instrument:

Accelerating Impact and Value in High-Demand Environments

An extensive eight-year research effort involved interviewing over 100 notable achievers about their engagement and recovery from significant life struggles. It included astronauts, four-star generals, U.S. senators and governors, CIA field operatives, billionaires, celebrity entertainers, university presidents, CEOs, emergency doctors, media icons, combat special operations warriors, famous prisoners, and inner-city clergy.

Also included were focus groups and surveys of very diverse individuals from all walks of life from all over the world. Out of this emerged five personal leadership mindsets functioning in high-demand, high-challenge environments (i.e., Protector, Problem Solver, Optimizer, Creative Strategist, and Boundary Spanner). Themes and challenges involved ways to:

• Facing fear of the unknown.
• Getting unstuck, unlocking resistance, and recognizing self-limiting thoughts.
• Building strength to endure pain and the rigors of intensely imposed demands.
• Connecting deeply with self and others when it matters most.
• Create a less threatening social or physical landscape.
